Pileated Woodpecker

Above Jackrabbit Trail, aspen groves line a paved bike path that runs along the south side of the park connecting Weaselhead to Fish Creek Park further south.

Stroll through here during the quieter months of winter and you will often encounter woodpeckers as big as ducks.

Pileated Woodpeckers are the largest woodpecker in Calgary's famous Weaselhead. They play an important role in the ecosystem by carving out cavity nests that are later used by several species of cavity dwelling waterfowl, owls and even squirrels.
