Introduced from the USA Rocky Mountain Region. Frequently planted as an ornamental: several distinctive cultivar are recognized. A medium-sized tree to 25m tall. Needles stiff, spine-tipped when young, becoming blunter with age; usually bluish-green, at least when young, 15-30mm long. Twigs hairless, very stout, shiny yellowish-brown. Bark, flaky, purplish-grey to brown, becoming reddish-brown, breaking into coarse plates with age. Flowers, male orangish, to 2cm; female to 4cm; appear in May. Fruit: cylindrical cones with tapered tip, 5-12cm long; scales, shiny, pale brown, thin, flexible, loose-fitting, tapering to a jagged tip, wavy margin. Have been planted in most city parks.
