This species breeds along the western coast of North America, from Alaska to Washington. In migration, it occurs casually inland to Alberta.
There are Alberta specimens from Therien and Bear Lakes. In recent years, it has been seen annually in the Calgary area. Spring sightings are from late March to mid May at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, Glenmore Landing and McElroy Slough. In autumn, it has been recorded in October and November, mostly from Elliston Park and the Shepard Landfill.
This predatory species also scavenges along shores and at landfill sites.
It nests in colonies on coastal headlands, rock ledges or low islands.
