The Nevada Bumble Bee is one of the 35 species or so of the easily recognized and beloved Bumble Bee species that are found in Alberta. The Nevada Bumble Bee is about 20 mm long. The female worker has a black spot in the middle of the thorax between the wings. The first three abdominal segments are yellow, and the last three segments and the legs are black.
Although it is more common that species diversity of an insect group increases as one goes south, Bumble Bee species are more numerous at cooler latitudes. Their cozy ‘fur coats’ keep them warmer and allow them to fly in cooler weather than many other insects.
