Native to Alberta. Perennial.

General Description

By Gustave J. Yaki

Native across northern N. America. Manitoba's Provincial Tree. Common and widespread in Calgary, naturally and as an ornamental. Moderate-sized tree, to 25m tall. Leaves, pointed but not sharp, 15-22mm long; green to bluish-green; unpleasantly pungent when crushed (resembling wet cat's fur), projecting from all sides of branches like a bottle brush, usually denser on the top and pointing forward. Twigs shiny; light greenish-grey, sometimes tinged with purple or orange. Main branches horizontal, sometimes sloping down in the lower half of tree. Bark, purplish-grey, broken into rounded flakes. Flowers, male, about 2.5cm long when shedding pollen; female same size; April-May. Fruit: pendant cones, slender, cylindrical, 4-6cm long; crush easily but do not break; scales thin, tough, flexible, outer margin rounded, light brown in colour. Habitat: grows best on well drained soils. Largest trees in Calgary are in Weaselhead, dbh.--- sWeas.N50.59.173/W114.09.702.
