Native to western N.
America. Locally uncommon to common. Stems, lacking; entire plant smooth (lacking glands or hairs).
Leaves, basal rosette, blade and leafstalk, 4-20cm long; oval or spatulate; rounded or sharp-pointed, base
tapered; edge untoothed, occasionally wavy. Flowers, 3-20, nodding from stalks 1-5cm long, on stems 5-50cm
tall; showy, 5 strongly reflexed petals, cut almost to base, magenta to lavender, with white throats;
stamens tightly arranged around the style, and projecting forward, usually dark at base; May-June. Fruit,
erect cylindrical capsule, with numerous seeds, 2-3mm long; capsule teeth sharp pointed. Habitat: poorly
