Native; widespread across N. America. Common. Stems, small shrub, 1-3m tall, lower branches often prostrate and rooting; the twigs deep red, sometimes greenish or purplish, sometimes downy. Leaves, opposite; oval, sharp or pointed tipped; downy below, 2-8cm long. Flowers, in a flat umbel-like cluster, downy; petals white, 2-3mm long; June-Sept. Fruit, a juicy inedible berry, white or tinged with blue, nearly round, about 5mm across, highly prized by many birds. Habitat: moist woods, river banks. sWeas.N50.59.178/W114.09.742.
